Dead fish in river investigated

Hundreds of dead fish have been found along a 5km (3 mile) stretch of a river in Hampshire near the Berkshire border.

The Environment Agency said it had received several calls from people reporting seeing pollution, thought to be sewage, entering Silchester Brook.

An investigation has begun and the agency said it believed it had managed to trace the source of the pollution, which has killed both perch and trout.

Fisheries officers have visited the river to take samples.

Ben Govan, environment officer, said: "This is a serious incident which has affected a long stretch of the Silchester Brook.

"Environment officers are currently on site collecting evidence and sampling, and we have staff taking further samples from the river and doing some ecological monitoring.

"We would like to thank members of the public for informing us of this incident promptly, and will fully investigate the causes and impact of what has clearly been a serious incident."
