Riley Ferguson death: Driver jailed for killing neighbour's child
A driver has been jailed for two years for knocking down and killing his neighbours' five-year-old boy.
David Cowell, 42, struck Riley Ferguson when he pulled on to the drive he shared with the victim's family in Milton Keynes, in June 2015.
Riley died four days later.
At Aylesbury Crown Court, Cowell, of Deacon Place, Middleton, was jailed and disqualified from driving for five years. He was found guilty last month, of causing death by careless driving.
Riley was sitting on the drive talking to a friend when he was hit by the car driven by Cowell on 7 June, the court heard.
Gavin Hernandez, of the Crown Prosecution Service, said Cowell maintained he did not see Riley and had "conducted all reasonable observations", but "there was a child plainly visible at the mouth of the drive as he approached".
"For these reasons he should have been alert to the possibility of another hazard or obstruction and should have proceeded with maximum care and attention," he said.
Thames Valley Police, who investigated, described it as a "tragic case".
Cowell was convicted of causing Riley's death by a jury in September.
