A groom was left with a broken nose and his bride was punched in the head when two wedding parties clashed at a hotel, jurors were told.

Glen and Georgina Evans were struck at Fanhams Hall Hotel in Ware, where they were staying on their wedding night, St Albans Crown Court heard.

Lee Doyle, 37, of Houghton Regis; and Gary Hutson, 46, of Luton; both guests at another wedding reception in the hotel, are accused of the attack.

They deny affray on 10 August 2014.

The court heard how an argument broke out when Mr Doyle and Mr Hutson asked Mr and Mrs Evans and their friends to move away from a fireplace where they were having a drink following their own reception at another hotel.

Bruised head

Mr Evans said the two men and the other groom confronted him, saying the area was reserved, although his party had been put there by bar staff.

He said the two men hit him, and he was also kicked and punched by others who joined in the attack. The jury was told Mrs Evans was then also punched.

Mr Evans sustained bruising to his head and ribs. His nose, which he had recently broken playing football, was fractured for a second time.

The couple eventually spent their wedding night in a different hotel.

"I went on honeymoon with my husband having a broken nose and me with bruising to my face," Mrs Evans told the jury.

Mr Evans denied allegations that he had thrown the first punch and had been "aggressive".

The trial continues.
