A police constable in Hertfordshire has been charged with rape and possessing indecent images of a child.

PC Leigh Brightman, 36, who lives in the north of the county, is also charged with misconduct in a public office and possessing a film featuring indecent images.

He was arrested in August and was suspended pending the outcome of the investigation.

He has been bailed to appear at Luton Magistrates' Court on 5 January.

The constable was based at Watford, Hemel Hempstead, Rickmansworth and Hitchin during his police service.

A police spokeswoman said: "Given the gravity of the allegations, considerable specialist resources have been deployed to investigate.

"This has resulted in the charges being brought.

"The Independent Police Complaints Commission has also been informed and there has been liaison throughout."
