Hertfordshire ram death 'may not be arson'

Police investigating the death of a Hertfordshire ram, initially thought to have been set alight, say it may not have died as a result of fire.

The ram is thought to have died between 18:30 BST on 5 August and 11:00 the following morning in a field near Tewin Water, in Welwyn Garden City.

A police spokesman said the animal was still being examined by experts.

"We are treating this as a suspicious death and keeping an open mind. We have not ruled out arson," he said.

PC Simon Tibbett added: "When the incident was reported to us, it was believed the ram had died as a result of burn injuries.

"As this an on-going investigation we are consulting with scenes of crimes officers and veterinary experts, and are keeping an open mind as to what caused the injuries to the animal."

He stressed the ram's death was being treated as an isolated incident and appealed for witnesses.
