A man is in a life-threatening condition after his car became trapped under a lorry on the M1 in Hertfordshire.

Emergency crews were called to the southbound carriageway, between junctions 9 and 8, near Redbourn and Hemel Hempstead, at 1030 GMT.

The East of England Ambulance Service said the man, believed to be in his 30s, was trapped for more than two hours.

He was taken to a London hospital.

The fire service, paramedics and a doctor from Watford General Hospital worked together to treat, stabilise and remove the man from the vehicle, the ambulance service added.
