Boy falls from Hertfordshire shopping centre escalator

A twelve-year-old boy is being treated in hospital for a head injury after falling from an escalator at a shopping centre in Hertfordshire.

The East of England Ambulance Service were called to the Galleria in Hatfield at 1427 GMT on Monday.

Consultant anaesthetist Dr Martyn Wildman from the Queen Elizabeth ll Hospital also attended the scene.

The boy was taken to hospital to undergo further tests and is in a stable condition.

Ambulance service spokesman Gary Sanderson said the doctor attended because of the nature of the injury.

"One of our emergency care practitioners, Mark Giddens, who was first at the scene quickly recognised the patient was in a serious condition.

"Dr Wildman arrived and worked closely with the paramedics to treat, stabilise and immobilise the injured boy."
