A man has admitted driving dangerously after a car with a three-year-old passenger hit speeds of up to 140mph during a police chase.

The vehicle failed to stop on the A1 near Catterick on Tuesday and drove north to Scotch Corner.

Thomas Birkbeck, 31, then headed south before eventually being stopped by police near Boston Spa.

The car weaved in and out of traffic and hit several other vehicles before it was stopped by police.

Birkbeck, of Silverdales, Dinnington, Rotherham, pleaded guilty to four offences when he appeared before magistrates in Harrogate earlier.

He admitted driving while disqualified, driving without insurance and possessing cannabis with intent to supply, after police found a large stash of drugs in the car.

He is due to be sentenced at York Crown Court on 10 June.

A woman who was arrested has been released from bail but has been reported for prosecution in relation to drug offences, North Yorkshire Police said.

The girl is being looked after by social services.
