Police officer attempted bridge murder: Man charged

A man has been charged with the attempted murder of a police officer on a bridge over the A1.

At about 06:30 GMT on Thursday the officer was chasing a man in Newcastle, who tried to push him over the side of the footbridge.

Michael Walker, from Cornhill, appeared before North Tyneside magistrates.

The 28-year-old was charged with the attempted murder of a police officer, assaulting a police officer and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

He was remanded in custody and will appear before Newcastle Crown Court on 27 November.

The police officer was not injured, the force said.
