A lorry driver has been seriously injured and a major motorway is closed in both directions following a serious collision near Rochdale.

Police said a lorry went through the central reservation of the M62 on to the opposite side, colliding with a number of vehicles at about 08:15 BST.

The lorry driver has been airlifted to hospital in a critical condition.

The M62 is closed eastbound at J21 Milnrow and westbound at J22 on the A672 Ripponden.

All traffic which was stuck within the closed section behind the incident has now been released.

The lorry was carrying 44 tonnes of butter which must be removed before the lorry can be recovered, said police.

A "substantial diesel spill" has also damaged the carriageway which will need resurfacing before all lanes can re-open.

A spokesman for Highways England said the lorry crossed from the eastbound carriageway to the westbound carriageway and collided with two other lorries, a van and a car.

The clean-up is expected to take several hours.
