A nine-year-old boy who drowned in a Staffordshire river was trying to help a friend who was struggling, an inquest has heard.

Kai Lambe, from Hatton in Derbyshire, died in the River Dove in August after entering the water and slipping down a salmon chute near Tutbury Mill.

Recording a verdict of accidental death, the South Staffordshire coroner said Kai had been a weak swimmer.

Kai was pulled from the river but later died in hospital.

Following his death, the Lambe family said: "We are heartbroken and devastated at the loss of our vibrant, happy, bubbly little man".
