Animal disease testing labs to close in England and Wales

Eight government science laboratories are to close with the loss of up to 30 jobs.

The Animal Health and Veterinary Laboratories Agency (AHVLA) said it wanted to make better use of private vets and universities.

The closures are in Cornwall, Somerset, Warwickshire, Newcastle, Lancashire, Leicestershire, Hampshire and Wales.

The AHVLA said it was "making every effort to re-deploy affected staff". Unions have yet to comment.

Centres in Truro in Cornwall, Langford in Somerset, Luddington in Warwickshire, Newcastle, Preston and Sutton Bonington in Leicestershire will be closed early next year with Winchester planning to close in 2015.

The Aberystwyth surveillance centre will also remain open until mid-2014.
