Inmates charged over HMP Full Sutton 'officer hostage'

Three inmates have been charged with taking a prison officer hostage at a maximum security jail near York.

Feroz Khan, Fuad Awale and David Watson are charged with falsely imprisoning an officer at HMP Full Sutton in East Yorkshire.

The male officer suffered a broken cheekbone during the alleged incident in May. A second officer was also hurt.

The men appeared via video link at Westminster Magistrates' Court where the case was sent to the Old Bailey.

Khan and Awale are also accused of threatening to kill the officer.

Khan has also been charged with grievous bodily harm on the guard, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm on the second officer.

Khan, 26, appeared via video link from HMP Long Lartin.

Watson, 26, appeared from HMP Wakefield and Awale, 25, appeared from HMP Manchester.

Awale's lawyer Alex Rose asked for him to be brought closer to London because it would be a "major assistance in the preparation of this case".

The men's case was sent to the Old Bailey and the next hearing will take place on September 27.
