Essex baby sex attack accused appear in court

A couple have appeared in court charged with sex offences and neglect on a 14-week-old baby girl, who was found seriously injured in Essex.

The man, 31, and the woman, 23, from the Clacton area, are accused of two counts of attempted rape on the baby.

They have also been charged with child cruelty and neglect.

No application for bail was made at Colchester Magistrates' Court and the pair were remanded in custody to attend Chelmsford Crown Court on 21 October.

The pair are also accused of three counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent, relating to serious head injuries and injuries of a sexual nature.

Social workers contacted police after the child was admitted to Colchester General Hospital.

Police said the baby remains in a critical condition.
