Cyclist dies after Northumberland ride collapse

A cyclist has collapsed and died during an event in Northumberland.

The man, who is believed to be from the Carlisle area, collapsed at Knowesgate crossroads, near Kirkwhelpington, during Sunday's Northern Angel event.

Event organisers said paramedics, doctors and fellow riders tried to revive the 52-year-old man but he was pronounced dead at the scene.

The event attracted more than 400 cyclists to three rides of different lengths.

In a statement event organisers UK Cycling Events said: "A rider on the Northern Angel Sportive suffered from a suspected heart attack whilst riding.

"Despite the best efforts of his fellow riders, paramedics and doctors to save his life, these were unsuccessful.

"Our thoughts and prayers our with his family at this sad and difficult time."
