Asian gold theft warnings in south of England

Asian families in parts of Berkshire and Hampshire are being warned to secure their gold against theft.

Police say there has been an increase burglaries in which Asian gold was targeted due to its high value.

In Berkshire, there have been more than 200 such offences reported to police since April last year.

In Southampton there have been 20 offences reported so far in 2012 and officers have been distributing warning leaflets at temples and mosques.

In the past five years the price of gold has increased sevenfold, making gold jewellery a particularly tempting target for thieves.

Harjap Singh, chairman of Southampton Gurdwaras, said: "There are a lot of people have been robbed, especially in the run-up to Diwali.

"My advice is, if you are going to keep the gold, then make sure you keep it safe and where somebody can't find it easy."
