A world record has been set for the sale of a football programme.

The 1909 FA Cup Final document detailing the tie between Manchester United and Bristol City sold for £23,500 at Sotheby's on Tuesday.

The game at Crystal Palace was the first time Manchester United had appeared in an FA Cup final and was Bristol City's only appearance.

The previous record of £21,850 was set in 2006 when the 1889 FA Cup Final programme went under the hammer.

Auctioneer Graham Budd said the programme was bought by a UK collector.

"There was some discussion it might go overseas but it did not in the end," he said.

"It is extremely scarce and the first time that one has ever been offered at auction."
