TV Licensing catches 6,400 fee dodgers in Devon and Cornwall

About 6,400 households and businesses were caught watching television without a licence in Devon and Cornwall last year, TV Licensing says.

The licence fee collection service said they were among more than 292,000 evaders in England in 2011.

People were given opportunities to pay but would be prosecuted if they failed to do so and watched TV illegally, it added.

Offenders can be fined up to £1,000, plus court costs and victim surcharges.

A colour TV licence costs £145.50.
