Man dies in multi-vehicle crash on A66 in County Durham

A man has died in a multi-vehicle collision on a main road in County Durham.

The crash happened on the eastbound carriageway of the A66, near Bowes, at about 0645 GMT.

Durham Police said it is believed to have involved one lorry and six other vehicles and the man who died was the driver of one of the other vehicles.

The road was closed in both directions between Bowes and Brough and was due to remain shut for several hours.

Officers from the Durham force along with officers from Cumbria Police and the Highways Agency staff were at the scene.
