Ex-Villa player Chris Price swept to sea in Brisbane

A former top flight footballer is recovering after being swept out to sea by a rip current in Queensland.

Chris Price, who played for Hereford, Aston Villa and Blackburn and moved to Australia two years ago, was engulfed by a wave on a Brisbane beach.

Lifeguards found the former defender, 50, face down and not breathing. He recovered but then caught pneumonia.

Aston Villa Former Players Association said he was still being treated for pneumonia and could stand but not walk.

He was caught by the rip current while playing with his youngest daughter on a beach close to his home in Brisbane.

The full-back started his career with his home-town club Hereford United and played more than 100 games for Aston Villa between 1988-1992.

While there, he collected a runners-up medal in the old Division One in season 1989-90.

He also played for Blackburn Rovers from 1986 to 88, and for a second spell between 1992 and 1993.
