A woman has died after being pulled from a frozen lake in West Yorkshire, police have said.

The woman, who is believed to be in her 30s, was discovered in the boating lake at Pontefract Park, near the racecourse, on Wednesday.

She was taken to Pontefract General Infirmary where she later died.

West Yorkshire Police said it was not known whether the incident was related to the adverse weather conditions in the area.

An underwater search unit was sent to investigate the scene which has been cordoned off, although it is understood the woman's death is not being treated as suspicious.

A police spokesman said: "We were called at 10.25 this morning to a report of a woman in the lake.

"The full circumstances of this incident are being investigated."
