A man accused of child rape who failed to attend a court appearance has been arrested and remanded in custody.

Peter Dunlop, of Weardale, was due to appear at Durham Crown Court on October 4, but failed to appear.

The 56-year-old is accused of rape, sexual assault and gross indecency on girls under 16 dating back to 1994.

He was arrested in Newcastle after a police appeal and admitted absconding when he appeared before Durham Crown Court on Monday.

He was remanded in custody and a date for his next court appearance has not yet been set.
