A former nightclub doorman is due to go on trial next May for the murder of Surrey schoolgirl Milly Dowler.

Levi Bellfield, 42, formerly of West Drayton, west London, is alleged to have kidnapped the 13-year-old in Walton-on-Thames on 21 March 2002.

Her remains were found six months later in woodland in Yateley Heath, Hampshire, 30 miles away.

Mr Bellfield is also accused of attempting to kidnap Rachel Cowles, 12, the day before Milly went missing.

He appeared at the Old Bailey for a brief hearing via videolink on Wednesday, where he was remanded in custody to face trial on 5 May.

Amanda Dowler, who was known as Milly, disappeared as she walked home from a railway station after school.
