Men in court over Hartlepool-Sheffield Wednesday fight

Two men have appeared in court after violence flared between Hartlepool fans and Sheffield Wednesday supporters.

Trouble broke out in Station Approach, Church Street, Hartlepool, on Saturday after Wednesday beat Hartlepool 5-0.

Paul Bennett, 23, of Hartlepool, has been remanded in custody charged with assaulting two Sheffield Wednesday fans aged 46 and 50.

Dean Carroll, 27, accused of assaulting the 46-year-old, was bailed by magistrates.

Four other men, aged 25, 45, 48, and 20, arrested during the fight, have been bailed pending further inquiries.

The 50-year-old victim is critically ill while the 46-year-old Wednesday fan suffered head injuries and is recovering in hospital.

Mr Carroll and Mr Bennett will next appear before Hartlepool Magistrates' Court on 3 September.
