Armed raiders threaten to kill Durham woman

Burglars threatened to kill a woman and locked her in a cupboard during a raid in County Durham.

The masked men, armed with baseball bats, smashed their way into their victim's house in High Etherly, near Bishop Auckland, on Thursday night.

They threatened to kill her and her dog and eventually fled in her Land Rover, taking money and jewellery.

The 50-year-old managed to get out of the cupboard and was uninjured but shaken by her ordeal.

Durham Police said the house is isolated on the outskirts of the town and the woman was alone at the time of the raid.

Det Insp Simon Orton of Cleveland Police said: "From comments made by the gang, it was clear they had knowledge of the premises and the occupant.

"I have no doubt they deliberately targeted this house and that their threats were genuine."
