Luton man in court over alleged Syria travel attempt

A 21-year-old man has appeared in court accused of a terrorism offence after allegedly trying to travel to Syria.

Mubashir Jamil, from Luton, is charged with intending to commit acts of terrorism by travelling to Syria to "engage in violent jihad" between November 2015 and April 2016.

He appeared at Westminster Magistrates' Court wearing a grey sweatshirt and spoke only to confirm his details.

He was remanded in custody and is due to appear at the Old Bailey on 3 June.

The charge states that Mr Jamil "with the intention of committing acts of terrorism, engaged in conduct in preparation for giving effect to his intention, namely by making a travel booking and purchasing items in order to assist him to travel to Syria and engage in violent jihad".

He was arrested at his home last Wednesday.
