- Chief Whip Andrew Mitchell has resigned a month after a confrontation with police in Downing Street
- He had been under mounting pressure following the incident in which he shouted at an officer who said he could not take his bike through the main gate
- In his resignation letter to the PM, Mr Mitchell says "it has become clear to me that whatever the rights and wrongs of the matter I will not be able to fulfil my duties as we both would would wish"
