Wreaths laying at memorial

The 80th anniversary of an air raid on St Peter Port Harbour was marked by the laying of wreaths at a memorial to the 34 civilians who were killed.

Simon Hamon, historian and author, spoke about the "sustained" bomb and machine gun attack on the harbour prompted by the pilots mistaking trucks filled with tomatoes for export with troop movements.

Three of the planes went on to attack Jersey's harbour causing a further nine deaths.

Among those listed on the memorial is Harold Hobbs who was killed when the Guernsey lifeboat, which was returning from Jersey, was strafed.
