  4. Polish hero's tiny award goes under hammer for big money

A decoration given to a Polish Spitfire pilot shot down, captured and murdered in World War two has sold in Cumbria for what may be a record price.

Auctioneer Ken Payne with caterpillar pin

The tiny gold brooch, held here by valuer Ken Payne, was one awarded to all pilots who escape a crashing aircraft by parachuting to safety, and the caterpillar is actually a silkworm, because parachutes are made of silk.

It was awarded to Kapitan Stanislaw Zygmunt Krol in 1942, but never collected because he was captured and then shot after breaking out of prison in an incident immortalised in the film, The Great Escape,

The North Lancashire family that inherited the treasure sold it in an internet auction through the 1818 Auctioneers at Crooklands in Cumbria, and it has now been revealed that the winning bid was £4,700.

Mr Payne said the price "exceeded the price paid for the same pin presented to Dutch aviator Bram Van der Stok, one of only three people to successfully escape from Stalag Luft III, which sold for over £3,200 at auction in 2018."
