Man arrested over park rape

A 32-year-old man has been arrested after a woman was raped in a park in Andover.

The victim, aged 23, was attacked off Smannell Road in the early hours of Sunday 2 June, Hampshire police said.

The man, who is from the town, remains in police custody and the woman is being supported by specialist officers.

Schools warned after boy approached by man in street

Police are carrying out patrols and speaking to schools after a boy was approached by a man he did not know in Shirley in Southampton.

The man stopped his car and spoke to the 12-year-old, who was walking along St Edmund’s Road, shortly after 16:00 BST on Wednesday.

He was driving a dark coloured car with tinted windows and is described as dark skinned.

Officers are treating it as a suspicious incident and have also been speaking to parents and children at local schools.

Road Safety Officers from Hampshire and the Thames Valley are taking part in a joint operation, using the height of a bus as a vantage point to spot wrongdoing.

Survey shows level of violence against police in Hampshire

One in five Hampshire police officers surveyed had suffered one or more injuries that required medical attention as a result of work-related violence in the last year, the local Police Federation branch has revealed.

It resulted in 484 days in sickness absence.

Hampshire Police Federation Chairman Alex Charge criticised sentencing policy for those convicted of assaulting police officers.

“Sadly the message doesn’t seem to have got through and we continue to see perverse, weak and unacceptable sentences for those who assault officers across our county," he said.
