A new online lottery with a £25,000 jackpot is being considered in Middlesbrough with the idea that it would raise funds for local events.

Coronavirus has hit both the culture and arts sector across Teesside and Middlesbrough Council's finances.

Council bosses are now looking at launching a community lottery with 60p out of every £1 ticket going to support events in the town and cash prizes of £1,000, £250 and £25.

Players would be able to choose which causes would benefit.

Executive member Mieka Smiles said culture and events “drew footfall” to town centres and needed support.

Opposition Labour group leader Matt Storey said it was a "sad indictment of this government’s record that councils have to resort to delivering gambling as a solution to our funding crisis".

Leaders will vote on the new community lottery next Tuesday.
