A rail firm could be taken in to public ownership should it fail financially, the government has said.

Transport Secretary Grant Shapps said South Western Railway's (SWR) franchise was now "not sustainable in the long term"

The company recently declared a £137m loss.

It said it was involved in "ongoing and constructive discussions" with the government over remedies for the problems with its franchise.

An "operational incident" with one train outside Waterloo Station is causing delays and cancellations, South Western Railway have said.

A spokesperson for the firm said passengers on the affected train were evacuated from it "quickly and safely and there have been no reported injuries".

“Network Rail engineers and SWR staff are on site to identify and fix this issue as soon as possible", they said.

Passengers have been advised to check before they travel due to cancellations and short notice changes which are expected to last until this evening.
