Mexico is opening some of its stunning archaeological sites to the public again after coronavirus forced them to close.

On Tuesday the remains of Mayan city Chichén Itzá joined the list.

The city in Yucatán was built in the 9th and 10th Centuries - the stepped pyramid El Castillo displayed Mayan astronomical knowledge. It features a total of 365 steps, the number of days in the solar year.

A Unesco World Heritage Site, it was also named one of the New Seven Wonders of the World by a Swiss foundation in 2007.

Visitor groups are limited to ten people due to coronavirus safety precautions, and masks and temperature checks are mandatory.

Another pre-Hispanic archaeological site, El Cóporo, has also re-opened this week, Mexico's Culture Ministry says.

This week Mexico passed 700,000 coronavirus infections, but the health ministry says the true number is unknown due to limited testing. At least 74,348 people have died in the country from Covid-19.
