The University of Portsmouth says 17 students are self-isolating after testing positive for coronavirus.
A spokesman for the university said 13 of the cases were picked up through its own asymptomatic testing programme via a mobile testing unit on campus.
The other four cases were detected by the NHS testing unit which is also based on the campus.
The spokesman said the university is currently testing about 200 students a week and hopes to raise that to 300 when term starts next week.
The university is working with local health authorities and the NHS track and trace system to reach any close contacts, he added.
