Copeland Borough Council says it stands ready to cancel a by-election planned for next week, as soon as the law allows it to do so.
A poll for a new councillor in Whitehaven Central is due to take place next Thursday (26 March).
There'd been criticism of the decision to hold it despite the coronavirus outbreak, but as the law stands, it cannot be cancelled because a notice of election has been published.
An emergency coronavirus bill going to the Commons tomorrow will have a provision for cancelling by-elections.
