The Environment Agency says blue-green algae has returned to Coniston Water and several other Cumbrian lakes.

The algae can cause health problems such as stomach upsets or skin rashes, but it is more of a risk to animals and domestic pets such as dogs.

The agency says it is more likely during periods of warm, settled, dry weather but can also form after heavy rain, and said sightings should be reported to its staff on 0800 80 70 60 so landowners around the lake could be warned.

Nicki Ruston from the agency said: "We would urge dog owners to keep their pets out of the water if they suspect that blue green algae may be present."
