KFC is to trial meatless "chicken" nuggets made from plants as it tries to further take advantage of the growing popularity of meat substitutes.

It has teamed up with vegan food maker Beyond Meat to offer meatless nuggets and wings for the limited US trial run.

KFC's Beyond Fried Chicken will be offered at one restaurant in Atlanta on 27 August and will still be "finger lickin' good", as its slogan promises.

KFC, which tested a vegan alternative to its chicken burger earlier this year in the UK, is one of many fast-food chains to be experimenting with plant-based food.

Kevin Brennan, chief executive of Quorn Foods is obviously delighted that his product will be sold through KFC branches, but he told Wake Up To Money that the new meat-free burger is something that the two companies have been working on for some time.

"We recognise that at a place like KFC where there's a very narrow menu they have to [launch a vegan burger] at the right time.

"We learned that with Greggs. It was similarly a long process."

He predicted "decades of growth" for the production of meat-free food.

There's a generational shift in meat consumption," he said.

The number of new vegan or animal-free products hitting the shelves has more than tripled from just 7.1% in 2014 to 22.4% in the first few months of 2019.

The trend has even arrived one of Britain's most popular fried chicken fast-food outlets.

Jack Hinchliffe, marketing director at KFC UK told Wake Up To Money: "I think it would surprise a lot of people that KFC, famous for our chicken is now looking at extending the menu and offering vegetarian and vegan burgers.

"It's a big change but the time's right," he said.

The company will be offering a Quorn fillet burger.
