'Unionists didn't vote for us'

Colum Eastwood, leader of the SDLP, says that if unionist votes weren't going to the UUP, "they weren't going to be going to us".

He says that in this election, the SDLP would have needed unionists to vote for the party.

"That didn't happen this time," he says.

'We haven't been destroyed'

With two SDLP candidates as the first councillors to be elected in Derry City and Strabane, the SDLP vote will be seen as the party beginning to reverse its downward spiral.

Derry is considered the party’s spiritual home but Sinn Féin overtook them and became the largest party in the 2014 council elections.
