1. Union: Infections confirmed after hospital mask problem

Several staff working in hospital operating theatres in North Cumbria tested positive for coronavirus, in areas where a type of face mask was not properly tested for fit for a number of weeks, according to the GMB union.

BBC Radio Cumbria revealed yesterday that masks, called respirators, did not undergo essential safety tests for five weeks because the department doing the work was struggling to cope with the wide variety of equipment needing examination.

The union says its referring the North Cumbria Integrated Care trust to the Health and Safety Executive.

The trust is yet to respond specifically to the GMB, but it has apologised to staff for the failing and said improvements had been made to the testing system..
