Proposals to cut the equivalent of about 200 jobs at Stoke-on-Trent have been approved this afternoon to meet increased demand for its children's services.

The council is losing the roles so it can redirect £5.5m to deal with rising numbers of vulnerable youngsters, many of them in care.

Ahead of the full council meeting this afternoon, which approved the plans, the GMB union warned the cuts could put more pressure on other staff.

Councillor Abi Brown, Conservative leader of the coalition-run local authority, admitted it was a "challenge" but she would urge senior staff to think carefully over who takes voluntary redundancy so services don't struggle.

The number of full-time posts that might go has fallen by 48 since the proposals were first announced in August.

The council needs to find £5.5m to spend on looking after children in care.

An Ofsted report in March found vulnerable children were "not being protected" and rated services inadequate.

The plans will be considered at a full council meeting.

The city council's approved plans to increase the window for responses to emergency work from two to four hours.

Crews will also have seven days to deal with potholes that pose a risk to public safety, rather than the end of the next working day.

The council says the timescales reflect current national policy.

The proposals by Stoke-on-Trent City Council will see 162 jobs lost and 86 vacant posts scrapped to fund the additional money.

The move follows an Ofsted report in March which found vulnerable children were "not being protected" and rated services inadequate.

The council says it's proposing creating 138 new jobs in children's services and the proposals will now go for full council approval next week.

The local authority's looking to save £600,000 each year by not renewing the contract and instead replace it by extending the city's existing breastfeeding peer support programme, made up currently of two volunteers.

But, after being lobbied by mothers and opposition councillors at its full council meeting, the local authority agreed to send the decision for an urgent review and scrutiny.

A faulty joint was discovered on the A53 Festival Park flyover, in Etruria, on 9 July.

Repair works were carried out but contractors then took samples from the bridge's concrete to try and work out why the hole had opened up in the first place.

The council says the results are now being analysed by an expert and could mean either further repair works starting or more tests having to be made on other parts of the bridge.

It means the local authority can't say when the fly-over will reopen.

A consultation's underway until 6 September by Stoke-on-Trent City Council, which wants to bring in permit parking on "event" days.

The scheme would see residents having to pay £25 every two years for a visitors’ permit - on top of a £5 administration fee - to park on match days between midday and 21:00.
