Council briefing warns of Brexit risks

Brexit could close schools and force care homes to shut in West Berkshire, according to a leaked council briefing.

The West Berkshire Council slides listed the "risks to the council and the community".

The briefing also warned of fuel shortages, disruption to food and medicine supply chains and an increase in hate crime. It also said the council had put aside £315,000 to deal with the risks.

It comes after the government was forced to publish its Yellowhammer contingency plans for Brexit.

A spokesman for the council said last week councillors were updated on its Brexit preparations and many of the scenarios detailed on the slides were "worst case".

New homelessness project launches in West Berkshire

A new project to tackle homelessness in West Berkshire is adopting a Scandinavian approach.

Run by the council, Sovereign Housing Association and homelessness charity Two Saints, Housing First will run 10 homes providing somewhere for people needing a long-term place to live.

It will offer them a tenancy first, before providing support.

Hilary Cole is from West Berkshire Council: "These people need quite a lot of support because some of them have never lived in a house or not for a long time.

"They've probably been sleeping rough so part of it is for us to get people off the streets and into accommodation and support them on that journey."
