Leeds East MP secures place in Labour deputy leader race

Labour MP for Leeds East and Shadow Justice Secretary Richard Burgon has secured enough nominations to qualify for the next round of the deputy Labour leadership race.

Mr Burgon is one of five candidates for the position alongside, Angela Rayner, Ian Murray, Dawn Butler, and Rosena Allin-Khan.

He received 22 votes, the minimum needed to qualify for the next phase.

Richard Burgon MP to stand to be new Labour deputy leader

Leeds East MP Richard Burgon has announced he intends to stand to be Labour's deputy leader.

Writing on Twitter he said: "After a break and discussions with MPs and party members, I’m announcing that I'm standing to be Labour's Deputy Leader."

Mr Burgon, who is the Shadow Secretary of State for Justice and Shadow Lord Chancellor, was re-elected earlier this month but saw his majority drop from 12,752 to 5,531.

Jeremy Corbyn has said he will stand down as leader early next year in the wake of Labour's election defeat earlier this month, where much of the party's traditional Northern strongholds fell to the Conservatives.

While the timetable for the contest has yet to been announced, it is expected to begin next month, with a new leader set to be in place by the spring
