Nearly half a million UK pupils face a fresh round of results chaos after exam board Pearson pulled its BTec results on the eve of releasing them.

Pearson said it would be re-grading all its BTecs to bring them in line with A-levels and GCSEs, which are now being graded via school-based assessments.

Natasha Barley, director of Hull and East Yorkshire Children's University, said it was tough for students who couldn't plan their futures.

She said: "Hundreds of thousands of students aren't getting the results they were supposed to get today because the follow-up of the exam fiasco just carries on.

"And for BTecs, who were supposed to get their grades today and who are trying to plan their futures, now they're going to have to wait for how long until they actually get their results to make some kind of decision about what they're going to do next year?

"I just feel so sorry for them," she added.

  3. What Pearson says about delaying BTec results

The exam board delaying the release of its BTec results while it brings them in line with GCSE and A-levels said it was doing so "for fairness".

In a statement, Pearson said it would be regrading students after the announcement that GCSE and A-level pupils would receive grades provided by their teachers.

"We will be applying the same principles for students receiving BTec results this summer," Pearson said.

"We will be regrading BTecs to address concerns about unfairness in relation to A Levels and GCSEs and ensure no BTec student is disadvantaged."

The board apologised for this causing "additional uncertainty" for students.

  4. BTec students 'incredibly resilient' after results pulled

BTec students at a college in Worcester have been praised for being "incredibly resilient" after their results were pulled on the eve of them being released.

    Christopher Whitehead Language College

Pearson said it would be re-grading all its BTecs to bring them in line with A-levels and GCSEs, which are now being graded via school-based assessments.

Neil Morris, head teacher of Christopher Whitehead Language College, said the move had left his pupils with no idea what they would do next.

"They have been amazing, they have been incredibly resilient and I suppose in the long-term, if we get the right results eventually they will cope with it. It's not any way to treat young people, certainly in a pandemic."

Pearson apologised and acknowledged the additional uncertainty the decision would cause.

  5. Pupils 'in limbo' after BTec grades pulled

    BBC Radio 5 Live

Pupils at a college in Warwickshire are in limbo as there is no timescale on when they will get their BTec results, according to the man in charge of them at their school.

    Etone College

Exam board Pearson pulled its BTec results on the eve of releasing them and said it would be re-grading them to bring them in line with A-levels and GCSEs.

Simon Carey, at Etone College, Nuneaton, is in charge of ensuring the quality of BTecs at the school and said his students did not know what they could do next in life.

"Their portfolio of qualifications will be empty in some places and if they are moving on to another institution where they are looking for a certain set of grades in order to get in there, or a number of points, then they have no proof whatsoever because they will be missing those qualifications for BTecs."

Pearson has apologised and acknowledged the additional uncertainty the decision would cause.
