Big majority for SNP in Lanark

SNP gain big majority in Lanark & Hamilton East, which was expected to be a tight contest.

Angela Crawley has achieved a 5,187 vote majority.

Lanark & Hamilton East: Scottish National Party hold

Angela Crawley has been re-elected as the MP for Lanark & Hamilton East, with an increased majority.

The Scottish National Party candidate beat Conservative Shona Haslam by 5,187 votes, more than double the majority at the 2017 election.

Andrew Hilland of the Labour Party came third and Liberal Democrat Jane Pickard came fourth.

Voter turnout was up by 3.1 percentage points since the last general election.

More than 53,000 people, 68.3% of those eligible to vote, went to polling stations across the area on Thursday, in the first December general election since 1923.

All four candidates keep their deposits, after receiving more than 5% of the votes.

Turnout is 68.5% in Lanark & Hamilton East.

In 2017, it was 65%, when the SNP's Angela Crawley won with a majority of 266.

'This is Corbyn and Leonard’s failure'

At the count in East Kilbride, a former senior Labour figure - who did not want to be named - told Catriona Renton they blamed Jeremy Corbyn and Richard Leonard for the poor prediction in the exit poll.

They added: "Labour needs to learn very valuable lessons and get closer to the people."

Counting under way in East Kilbride

Three constituencies will be counted at the John Wright Sports Centre in East Kilbride: Lanark & Hamilton East, Rutherglen & Hamilton West and East Kilbride, Strathaven & Lesmahagow.
