Belfast North constituency profile

A historically unionist urban constituency that takes in the northern part of the city of Belfast, it has been represented in Parliament by the DUP Deputy Leader Nigel Dodds since 2001.

It has always been represented by unionist MPs, with the exception of a brief period between 1973 and 1974 when Stratton Mills, elected as a unionist, defected to the newly-formed Alliance Party.

When the constituency was briefly split in two between 1918 and 1922, one part of it – Belfast Duncairn – was represented by the famous unionist leader Edward Carson.

With an electorate of 67,214 (as of 1 November) the constituency is very socially mixed. The areas around Belfast Castle include tree-lined avenues and large houses, while the lower Antrim Road area has a high level of deprivation. A number of peace lines remain within the constituency – which has a large nationalist population despite being held by a unionist MP. Nationalist candidates have come increasingly close to winning the constituency in recent years – in 2017 John Finucane of Sinn Féin was 2,081 votes behind Nigel Dodds.
