Stratford-on-Avon: Conservative hold

Nadhim Zahawi has been re-elected as the MP for Stratford-on-Avon, with a decreased majority.

The Conservative candidate beat Liberal Democrat Dominic Skinner by 19,972 votes, 1,986 votes less than the majority at the 2017 election.

Felix Ling of the Labour Party came third and the Green Party's Dave Passingham came fourth.

Voter turnout was up by 0.6 percentage points since the last general election.

More than 55,000 people, roughly three-quarters of those eligible to vote, went to polling stations across the area on Thursday, in the first December general election since 1923.

One of the four candidates, Dave Passingham (Green) lost his £500 deposit after failing to win 5% of the vote.

Nadhim Zahawi has been re-elected as Stratford-upon-Avon's Conservative MP.

He secured more than 60% of the vote - 33,343 votes compared to 13,371 for Lib Dem's Dominic Skinner who came second.

Ms Zahawi has been an MP for the the town since 2010.

MP's Single Market vision

Conservative MP for Stratford-on-Avon, Nadhim Zahawi, says the UK should be willing to consider paying for continued access to the Single Market after Brexit.

Writing for the blog site Conservative Home, the member of the Foreign Affairs Select Committee called on the prime minister to "remove acrimony" from negotiations and said he hoped that attitude would be reflected in her speech in Florence on Friday.

The 25-year-old from Stratford-upon-Avon doesn't have happy memories of the London stadium after pulling up injured at the 2012 Olympics.

He's been in outstanding form this season though and won the European indoor title in March.

Zahawi: 'Right policies but we didn't sell them'

The Conservative MP for Stratford-on-Avon, Nadhim Zahawi,says the party's election manifesto policies were right, but the party neglected to sell them sufficiently.

In a post on Conservativehome.com he writes that the manifesto contained a "good and hopeful" platform for government and the party must not now "retreat backwards".

"We were damaged by the social care policy and how poorly it was initially explained," he said.

"But we were also damaged by failing to focus enough on the positive policies that we had – the reasons to vote Conservative, rather than just the reasons not to vote Labour."

Conservative Nadhim Zahawi, who held onto his Stratford-on-Avon seat with a 20,958 majority, said all parties must now come together to help deliver a "good Brexit".
