Stockport: Labour hold

Navendu Mishra has been elected MP for Stockport, meaning that the Labour Party holds the seat with a decreased majority.

The new MP beat Conservative Isy Imarni by 10,039 votes. This was less than three quarters Ann Coffey’s 14,477 vote majority in the 2017 general election.

Wendy Meikle of the Liberal Democrats came third and the Brexit Party's Lee Montague-Trenchard came fourth.

Voter turnout was down by 0.9 percentage points since the last general election.

Nearly 42,000 people, 63.7% of those eligible to vote, went to polling stations across the area on Thursday, in the first December general election since 1923.

Two of the five candidates, Lee Montague-Trenchard (The Brexit Party) and Helena Mellish (Green) lost their £500 deposits after failing to win 5% of the vote.

Analysis: Was it 'Get Brexit Done' what won it?

Nina Warhurst

BBC North West Political Editor

A Labour campaigner here in Stockport has told me that Boris Johnson's "Get Brexit Done message was pithy - people got it. People didn’t get Jeremy Corbyn."

Meanwhile a Lib Dem source has told me: “Maybe our stance of revoke Brexit rather than calling for a second referendum was a mistake. It’s a moot point. We definitely had labour voters joining us tactically though - so you never know."

Finally, one Tory campaigner thinks they may overturn Labour's 14,000 majority in Stockport. While I think this is unlikely to happen, it's certainly not out of the question if the exit polls are accurate.

Tories confident in Cheadle and Hazel Grove

North West political editor Nina Warhurst reports that the Conservatives are very confident of increasing their majorities in the Cheadle and Hazel Grove seats.

Meanwhile, Labour are expected to retain Stockport.

Smiles as Labour's Ann Coffey retains Stockport

Labour's Ann Coffey held on to the Stockport constituency with 26,282 votes, increasing her majority by 4,416 since the general election in 2015.
