Poplar & Limehouse: Labour hold

Apsana Begum has been elected MP for Poplar & Limehouse, meaning that the Labour Party holds the seat with an increased majority.

The new MP beat Conservative Sheun Oke by 28,904 votes. This was more than Jim Fitzpatrick’s 27,712 vote majority in the 2017 general election.

Andrew Cregan of the Liberal Democrats came third and the Green Party's Neil Jameson came fourth.

Voter turnout was down by 0.6 percentage points since the last general election.

More than 61,000 people, roughly two-thirds of those eligible to vote, went to polling stations across the area on Thursday, in the first December general election since 1923.

Three of the six candidates, Neil Jameson (Green), Catherine Cui (The Brexit Party) and Andy Erlam (independent) lost their £500 deposits after failing to win 5% of the vote.
