Beds MP calls for change in law regarding travellers

Sarah Jenkins

BBC Local Live

The Conservative MP for Mid Bedfordshire is calling for a change in the law when it comes to dealing with traveller encampments.

Nadine Dorries is due to lead a debate in Westminster today highlighting the issue which affects her constituency and the surrounding area.

There are currently about 40 caravans encamped by the Woodside Link in Houghton Regis, some of which had recently been moved on from Dunstable by police.

Executive member for community services at Central Bedfordshire Council, Conservative Ian Delgarno, said he welcomed the debate.

"The issue of travellers moving around Bedfordshire has become more prevalent and the powers that the council has to deal with this issue aren't strong enough," he said.

"Currently, If the gypsy and traveller community turn up we have to do heath and safety checks and then serve a Section 77 notice, which is a direction to leave.

"If they don't go, we have to go to court and get a Section 78 notice, which orders their removal.

"We would like the criminal justice act to give local authorities the power to give a section 78 notice without going to to court."

The debate is due to take place in Westmisnter Hall at 11:00.

What happened to Labour overnight in Bedfordshire?

Patrick Byrne

BBC News

Labour increased its share of the vote across many parts of Bedfordshire and its leader Jeremy Corbyn is now calling for the party to form a minority administration.

Labour's Gavin Shuker held Luton South with an 18.2% boost to his support giving him an overall 62.4% share of the vote, while Dean Russell increase the Tory share by 1.6% both at the cost of UKIP and other minority parties.

In Luton North Kelvin Hopkins also saw a rise of 11.6% in his vote to give an overall showing of 63.8% while Caroline Kerswell boosted the Conservatives by 3.1%. Both benefited from UKIP not fielding a candidate.

Bedfordshire South West is safe territory for the Conservatives with Andrew Selous polling 59.2% of the vote with a 4.3% boost. Labour's Daniel Scott put up a good fight, increasing his share by 13.5% in a constituency where UKIP was again absent.

In Mid-Bedfordshire Nadine Dorries was triumphant with a 5.6% increase in her vote to give her a 61.7% share. Labour were left trailing despite a 12.6% boost, again with no UKIP candidate to upset them.

Result in: Dorries wins for Tories

Nadine Dorries holds on to her Mid Bedfordshire seat which is no surprise, but her massive majority has lost over 2,000.

Labour’s Rhiannon Meades almost doubles the votes for her party, compared to 2015.

Ms Dorries hasn't been listening to the national news as there are no televisions on and she hasn't been using her phone, but when she was told there was likely to be no overall majority for the Tories, she said that would be a "disaster".

She believes if this happens we will be "looking at another general election fairly soon".

A marquee signing for election night

We've seen plenty of sports halls and the like but this is the first marquee of the night.

It's been put up for the Mid and South West Bedfordshire constituency counts in Chicksands. There are 128 members of the public counting the votes.

Let's hope it's not too windy.

Mid-Bedfordshire: Constituency profile

Andy Holmes

BBC Three Counties Radio political reporter

Mid-Bedfordshire has been Tory since 1931 - aside from a brief period when Nadine Dorries was Independent after being suspended for six months by the party in 2012 for appearing on the reality TV show I’m a Celebrity…Get Me Out of Here!.

That appearance did her no harm at the polls in 2015 where she increased her majority to more than 23,000 and again it would be a surprise if she wasn’t named as MP for the seat that she’s held since 2005.

Standing in her way, are candidates from Labour, the Lib Dems and the Greens and also the former mayor of Flitwick Ann Kelly who will again represent the Monster Raving Loony Party, fresh from getting a higher share of the vote than her parties national average of 0.5% in 2015.
