Manchester Gorton: Labour hold

Afzal Khan has been re-elected as the MP for Manchester Gorton, with a decreased majority.

The Labour candidate beat Conservative Sebastian Lowe by 30,339 votes, 1,391 votes less than the majority at the 2017 election.

Jackie Pearcey of the Liberal Democrats came third and the Green Party's Eliza Tyrrell came fourth.

Voter turnout was down by 2.7 percentage points since the last general election.

Nearly 45,000 people, 58.3% of those eligible to vote, went to polling stations across the area on Thursday, in the first December general election since 1923.

Two of the five candidates, Eliza Tyrrell (Green) and Lesley Kaya (The Brexit Party) lost their £500 deposits after failing to win 5% of the vote.

Manchester Gorton: Labour hold

Labour's Afzal Khan has held Manchester Gorton for Labour with 35,085 votes - an increase of 7,898 on his predecessor, the late Gerald Kaufman who died earlier this year.

Mr Khan, who becomes the city's first Muslim MP, said his election after the Manchester bombing sent a "powerful message to the terrorists and the racists".

Tory Shaden Jaradat came second with 3,355.

Former Labour MP George Galloway, standing as an independent, polled 2,615.

The by-election caused by Mr Kaufman's death was cancelled when the General Election was called.
