Lichfield MP tells PM: 'Get rid of gas-guzzler Jaguar'

The prime minister should ditch Number 10's "gas guzzler" and replace it with a modern, electric Jaguar, according to Lichfield MP Michael Fabricant.

The new electric Jaguar I-Pace

Mr Fabricant appealed to Theresa May to support the car industry in the West Midlands which he said was "at the very heart of European autonomous drive and electric drive cars".

Mrs May said she could make no promises as "sadly the Jaguar in Number 10 Downing Street is not mine" but said she was looking forward to technology developments in self-driving cars.

She also said £31m had been invested in developing new automotive technologies in the West Midlands, including driverless cars.

PM Theresa May said she understood he was appearing on a Channel 4 celebrity special of First Dates after he posed a question to her about Birmingham's bid to host the Commonwealth Games.

Mrs May said: "I have noticed that he is shortly to appear on a Channel 4 programme called Celebrity First Dates. What I'm not sure about is whether he is the celebrity or the first date."

A rather red faced Fabricant could be seen on the benches smiling. He tweeted that he could neither "confirm or deny" the rumour when asked by BBC Politics.

PM backs Birmigham's bid to host 2022 Commonwealth Games

The Conservative Lichfield MP has asked the prime minister to back Birmingham's 2022 bid to host the Commonwealth Games over Kuala Lumpur, during this lunchtime's PMQs.

Michael Fabricant asked: "Would the PM speak to the chancellor to ensure he backs the bid to see Birmingham win the games over Kuala Lumpur?"

Michael Fabricant

The Commonwealth games being hosted in the UK in 2022 in Birmingham would present a unique opportunity for the West Midlands and it would of course promote global Britain across the Commonwealth. The next step is for Birmingham to demonstrate value for money in their bid but subject to that, I have no doubt Birmingham will continue the UK's rich history of hosting successful sporting events

Mrs May said overnight the country needed "stability" but there have been calls from within the party for her to go.

In 10 days' time EU negotiations begin. If we form government, we should start negotiations with Theresa May leading them."
